Fritz is the outcast pony that is excluded from the other beautiful horses.  Only the beautiful horses are permitted within the walls of the city and therefore, the short-legs and messy mane of Fritz cannot be allowed into the walls of the city.   Yet when a bridge gives way on his side and none of the beautiful horses are able (willingly or unwillingly) to help save the children, only Fritz can gather the courage to save the children and earn his respect from the city.

The illustrations are as intricate and gorgeous as all of Jan Brett’s work seems to be.  As all her works, the are incredibly detailed and complement the text in a superb way.
